Joining Hands in Support of Clean Energy

Dory Larsen, SACE’s Electric Vehicle Program Associate, contributed to this blog.   As a part of a growing global movement to protest offshore drilling, deep water drilling and offshore seismic testing, SACE participated in Hands Across the Sand events across the Southeast last Saturday, May 19. In Florida, thousands joined hands to say no to offshore […]

Electric Vehicles: Driving Reduced Demand for Offshore Oil, Part 3 of 3 – “Findings and Conclusions”

To replace the total gasoline supply associated with the newly opened areas offshore, the United States needs to replace about 32 million internal combustion engine vehicles with EV’s, with a range of 20-45 million EV’s, by 2030.

Electric Vehicles: Driving Reduced Demand for Offshore Oil, Part 1 of 3 – “The Risks of Offshore Drilling Outweigh Potential Benefits”

This is Part 1 of our blog series, “Electric Vehicles: Driving Reduced Demand for Offshore Oil,” which shows that given the advancements in vehicle electrification, expanding offshore drilling for oil and natural gas into protected areas is intrinsically risky and unnecessary. The first  part of the series explains the risks of offshore drilling and why […]

Write A Letter to the Editor To Protect Florida’s Shores from Drilling

The Florida Constitution Revision Commission’s oil drilling ban in state waters is up for a final vote in the full commission next week! It has a new proposal number (6004) and has been combined with the issue of prohibiting vaping in indoor enclosed indoor workplaces, meaning both issues will appear in the same proposal number.

SACE has made the following letter-to-the-editor toolkit to make it easy for you to submit a letter to your local newspaper, encouraging the CRC to support the offshore drilling ban. 4 Ways You Can Help Defeat Trump’s Disastrous New Drilling Plan

You may have heard the news that last week President Trump unveiled an utterly insane national plan for offshore drilling that seeks to auction off 90% of our country’s offshore waters to oil companies. In the plan, the coastlines of every single coastal state except Hawaii would be jeopardized by offshore drilling, with potential drilling […]

Trump Administration pushes offshore drilling EVERYWHERE

Today, the Trump Administration took a huge step toward disaster with the announcement of their draft proposed five year program for offshore drilling. The proposed plan will foist oil and gas drilling as close as 3 miles to shore along the entirety of the coasts of the lower 48 states, including the Atlantic, Straits of Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, and Pacific. Drilling privileges for Atlantic coast areas from Central Florida to Delaware would be auctioned to oil companies beginning in 2020 and for the Eastern Gulf of Mexico area currently under moratorium and Straits of Florida (off of South Florida and the Keys) in 2023. Altogether, the new drilling plan makes 90% of the nation’s waters available for oil companies to drill. Please stand with us, and the thousands of businesses, 125 local governments, and hundreds of thousands of citizens who have stood up to reject offshore drilling in favor of our coastal economy and quality of life, and join us to fight President Trump’s reckless drive to drill.

President Trump Threatens America’s Shores

Last week, the Trump Administration pushed its careless agenda to threaten America’s shores with risky offshore drilling despite overwhelming opposition from coastal Republicans and Democrats alike. The announcement came in the form of a “Request for Information,” which kickstarts the process of the Administration offering leases for offshore areas around the country to companies to use for oil and gas development. This move is an affront to the thousands of businesses, 125 local governments, and citizens who have stood up to reject offshore drilling in favor of our coastal economy and quality of life. While the tenant of the White House has changed in the past year, the facts that make offshore drilling a bad deal for the American public have not.

100+ Members of Congress Sign Letter: “No Drilling off Our Coast”

Yesterday, Congressman Mark Sanford co-led a bipartisan sign on letter of his colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives, asking Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke to uphold recently made guidelines, barring offshore drilling off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. 109 Members of Congress co-signed the letter, indicating faith that the recently completed plan, covering the years of 2017-2022, was carried out with diligence and reflects the will of Atlantic and Pacific coast residents. We wish to thank Congressman Sanford and the many Members of Congress from our region who signed onto the letter.
